Typographic Discourse

Skills/Software: Adobe InDesign, Book Binding, Hand Production, Typography

This 8x8 in book is split into three separate layouts — The Crystal Goblet by Beatrice Warde, Post Typographic Manifesto by Post Typography, and a combination of the two essays. The cover is an accordion fold with the layouts bound with a saddle stitch. Akin to Warde’s voice, The Crystal Goblet layout is clean, simple, and easy to read, whereas the Post Typographic Manifesto is dynamic, bold, and incorporates fold-outs of pull quotes. The combination layout is a long poster with the Post Typographic Manifesto text essentially drowning out The Crystal Goblet.

Process:
The decision to create a book that had no beginning and no end came about when I felt that both Warde and Post Typography deserved to have their voices heard equally, so the reader can view this book from either side of the book. I felt that the fold-outs were fitting for Post Typography’s post-modernist views on design.

Crystal Goblet  Spread - The layouts of this text was first set using Adobe InDesign and reflects Beatrice Warde’s voice in a clean, concise manner.
Post Typographic Manifesto Spread - The layouts for this text were set next and is louder, akin to Post Typography’s voice.
Combined Spread - This poster spread combines both Crystal Goblet  and Post Typographic Manifesto with Post Typography trying to drown out Warde’s voice.
